Important: RARE AmeriCorps Program member placements for year 2017-2018 are contingent on availability of program funding from AmeriCorps.

Timeline

Below is the anticipated schedule for placement of 2017-2018 RARE AmeriCorps members. Please note that the members will begin their service in September.
UPDATED Application, Selection and Placement Schedule:

  • April 14: Community Applications due
  • April 28: Member Applications due
  • May 8-31:Member Phone Interviews with RARE staff
  • June 30: Community Full Applications due
  • June 23: Members invited to participate
  • July 17-21: Members interview with potential communities
  • Aug 4: Final placement decisions will be made
  • September 6-8: Orientation
  • September 11: Placement in RARE AmeriCorps community begins

Benefits

RARE AmeriCorps members receive the following:

  • Living Stipend/Monthly: $1,600
  • Medical Insurance: If eligible, we will provide medical insurance. At this time, we do not provide vision or dental coverage.
  • Possible Child Care Benefits: If eligible, child care benefits are available.
  • Segal Educational Award: At the successful completion of 11 months (1,700 hours) of service, RARE AmeriCorps members may be eligible to receive an educational award of $5,815. (Educational Awards are dependent on grant funding. Check back for updates).
  • Student Loan Forbearance
  • Training in Community Development, Facilitation, Leadership, Etc.
  • Nine Graduate Credits: Each RARE AmeriCorps member will be eligible for 9 graduate credits from the University of Oregon’s Master of Community & Regional Planning, Master of Public Administration, or Master of Nonprofit Management program. (Other university programs may or may not accept the credits).
  • In-state Tuition: If a member is moving to Oregon, after the successful completion of their service they may be eligible for in-state tuition.

Eligibility

To participate in the RARE AmeriCorps Program you must have:

  • U.S. citizenship or be a permanent U.S. resident
  • A completed bachelor's degree
  • Six months applied community experience
  • Coursework or equivalent experience in three or more of the following areas:
    • Planning or statistical analysis
    • Planning or economic theory
    • Project management
    • Community or economic development
    • Environmental planning
    • Geographic information systems
    • Grantwriting;
  • Proficiency in Windows based computer applications and
  • An interest in the ideology of service-learning

Criminal Background Checks: All potential members must pass a check of the National Sexual Offender Public Registry before they will be offered a placement. All members must pass an FBI check and a criminal background check of state registries prior to beginning their placement.

Drug Testing Policy: Many of the organizations we work with have adopted Drug-Free Workplace Policies that are applicable to all employees and associates.  As a result, participants may be required to take a blood, breath or urinalysis test as part of an organization's pre-employment assessment process.

Selection Process and Criteria

RARE AmeriCorps staff will review completed applications. They will then select potential members and conduct interviews (by telephone) with those selected. Following these interviews, a preliminary pool of potential members will be selected and will be given information on communities that have successfully applied for a RARE AmeriCorps member. Those selected will be invited to interview with three or more communities where they will interview with the local supervisor. Selected communities and members then indicate their top choices to the RARE AmeriCorps staff. Every effort is made to match both the community’s and the member’s first or second preference. All placements are mutual decisions made by community supervisor, member, and RARE AmeriCorps staff. We cannot ensure that every person who interviews will find an appropriate placement.

Selection Criteria

Applicants for 2017-2018 RARE AmeriCorps placements must be college graduates (with a bachelor's degree) and U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents who have successfully completed the following:

  • Six months applied community experience: internship, practicum, Community Planning Workshop, other AmeriCorps program, Peace Corps, or a relevant job.
  • Coursework or equivalent experience in three or more of the following areas:
    • Planning or economic theory
    • Project management
    • Community or economic development
    • Environmental planning
    • Geographic information systems
    • Grantwriting
  • Proficiency in Windows based computer applications.
