Meet Bayoán Ware:

Bayoán earned a BA in Environmental Studies from Oberlin College (OH) and a MAT in Early Childhood Education from Relay Graduate School of Education (NY). Last year, he served as a RARE Planner for the Port of The Dalles in the Columbia River Gorge. Having been introduced to the role of economic development in community development, he looks forward to understanding how local governments meet this goal.

Community and Organization:

At just 23 miles southwest of Portland, the small City of Newberg has an urban flair that exceeds its size. However, surrounded by rich agricultural lands in Yamhill County, close to the Ribbon Ridge, Chehalem Mountain, and Dundee Hills American Viticultural Areas, it has not forgotten its agricultural heritage. Founded in the late 1800s as a small Quaker farming community along the Willamette River, its situation between Portland and McMinnville. The founding of George Fox University solidified Newberg as a regional hub that continually strives to maintain its sense of place and community.

Project:

As the Community Visioning Coordinator, Bayoán Ware will work with the Community Development Director to help the City of Newberg explore its ideal future. His responsibilities include conducting stakeholder interviews, gathering community input, providing updates to City Council, planning and facilitating meetings and events, and collaborating with the City Council appointed Citizen Action Committee. The information gathered will be used to create into a Community Visioning document, which will include Newberg’s Goals, Strategies and an Action Plan. This document will be reviewed by the City Council and Planning Commission and adopted by the Council.
