Roxanne Beltz, a city councilor in Monmouth, struck on the idea of using the birthday of children’s television host Fred Rogers to promote local trolley service. A red trolley was featured prominently in “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” from 1968 to 2001. Rogers was also known for wearing sweaters, so city and school officials rode local trolleys March 20 similarly attired.
