Katie Fischer

Meet Katie Fischer:

Katie has an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. During college she volunteered with the Eugene Public Library’s Maker Hub and worked as an undergraduate researcher for UO’s Soil + Water Lab. Although she has always loved science, her new love is the library. Within a week of working at Roseburg Public Library, she realized her dream job of becoming a public librarian. This was her second year serving with the library. Despite being born and raised in Minnesota, she now considers herself an Oregonian, and looks forward to exploring everything Oregon has to offer.

Community and Organization:

The City of Roseburg, originally founded in 1851 in southern Oregon’s Umpqua River Valley as a lumber industry town, has grown to be Douglas County’s largest city. Located less than 2.5 hours from Crater Lake, less than 2 hours from the coastal City of Coos Bay, and even closer to the Umpqua River and Umpqua National Forest, Roseburg has all the amenities of a city with easy access to amazing outdoor opportunities. With a historic downtown, breweries, museums, and restaurants, the city itself provides opportunities for both residents and visitors.

Project:

Katie Fischer led or contributed to various outreach projects for the City of Roseburg at the Roseburg Public Library. Katie assisted the Youth Services Librarian with formulating and organizing youth programming, including starting a few programs of her own. In addition, she managed one of the library’s social media platforms. She also wrote a five-year strategic plan for the Roseburg Public Library with the help of a strategic planning committee. Finally, she taught computer skills classes for adults, which included designing the curriculum and advertising the classes.
