Meet Christian Sala (he/him):

Christian Sala was born in Milan, Italy, to Italian parents. Three months later, his parents moved to Kenya, Africa, where they first met, to raise a family and start a small, humble Italian market. He remained there for 12 years, attending various schools, including a British boarding school and an American Baptist missionary school for families conducting missions in the area. Christian was a coordinator for the City of Eugene’s recreation department’s annual summer programs: Fun for All, Movies in the Park, rentals, afterschool teen programs, and specialty camps. He worked on facilitated camps and activities including Mural Camp, Minecraft Architecture Camp, and Walk in the Woods. Christian graduated from Miami Dade Community College with an associate degree in Business Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Economics, with a minor in Art History, from Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

Community and Organization:

Christian sees Roseburg as overwhelmingly inviting and warm, making it enjoyable and memorable. Roseburg is at the heart of the Umpqua Valley in Southwestern Oregon, with scenic views and many recreational opportunities. A great thing about Roseburg is its seasonal variety. Winter is cold, but not freezing. A lot of rain brings about a beautiful, blossoming spring, while the hottest months are July and August. Fall paints a pleasant and crisp picture with an array of colors in October. Some compare Roseburg geographically and climatologically with Italy and Southern France. As the largest city in Douglas County, it boasts many amenities and cultural activities including a prominent theater group with its venue in a city park.

Projects:

During his 11-month service term, Christian’s tasks will include continuing the great work at outreach services, assisting in developing and conducting adult programming, working with volunteers, assisting youth services, researching and implementing best practices for a three-year technology plan, and developing and invoking a library use assessment survey. He hit the ground running his first month of service, getting tech classes up and running while getting to know the patrons working at the front desk.
