Meet Laura Scully:

Laura was born and raised in Portland, OR, and graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in Planning, Public Policy, and Management in 2022. This is her second year in RARE, and she spent her first year working on rural public transportation in Central Oregon. She is passionate about cooking and loves to try new recipes. In her free time she enjoys crafting, exploring Oregon with other RAREs, and going to the movies.

Community and Organization:

Monmouth is a tight-knit community nestled in the heart of the Willamette Valley. The city is home to one of the oldest public colleges on the West Coast, Western Oregon University, which used to be the teaching college (known as a “Normal” school) for the state. Monmouth is known for being the last dry town in Oregon, as purchasing hard liquor in town only became legal in 2010.

Projects:

During her year in Monmouth, Laura will be working on a variety of projects based around the promotion of the city’s historic downtown. This includes highlighting arts and culture in the downtown area, working with Western Oregon University Art Department students to create a downtown tagline and graphic standards, and promoting downtown Monmouth as a regional tourist destination boasting downtown attractions as part of a cohesive regional experience. Additionally, she will provide promotional/marketing support for the newly launched trolley system and conduct an accessibility inventory of downtown. Later in the year, she will assist with managing a grant program to pay for improvements needed to make downtown more accessible.
